LIVING PLANET REPORT 2020 Are we overusing the planet?

 AN SOS FOR NATURE!

FIVE MAIN THREATS TO BIODIVERSITY CAUSED BY HUMAN ACTIVITIES

Changes in land and sea use, including habitat loss and degradation

Species overexploitation

Invasive species and disease

Pollution

Climate Change

SHOCKING NUMBERS

Between 1970 and 2016, 68% fall in populations of mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and fish has been observed

Studies in global plant diversity showed that one in five (around 22%) are threatened with extinction, most of them in the tropics

Since 1970, Freshwater LPI have declined by an average of 84%, (4% per year)

THREAT TO ECOSYSTEMS

75% of the Earth's ice-free land surface has already been significantly disturbed.

More than 85% of the area of wetlands has been lost.

These disturbances have led to 1 million species being threatened with extinction over the coming decades to centuries.

Humans are currently overusing the Earth's biocapacity by at least 56%.

RISING TEMPERATURES

Global emissions are projected to be about the same in 2030 as they are today.

Global temperatures could touch the 1.5°C threshold by the early to mid-2030s, and the 2° C threshold by 20502070

Without additional actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions we can witness a rise of 3-4° C.

HOW TO BEND THE CURVE OF BIODIVERSITY LOSS?

Increase conservation efforts: Increase in the extent, management and restoration of protected areas.

More sustainable production: Higher and more sustainable increase in both agricultural productivity and trade of agricultural goods.

More sustainable consumption: Reducing waste of agricultural goods.
