In the 1970s, Kalam also directed two projects, namely, Project Devil and Project Valiant, which sought to develop ballistic missiles from the technology of the successful SLV programme
Providing urban amenities to rural areas
He began a trust named 'Providing Urban Amenities to Rural Areas' (PURA) and he gave away all his salaries and savings for it after he found out that the government takes care of Presidents
Brains behind conducting Pokhran-ii nuclear tests
He played a crucial role in the 1998 Pokhran-II nuclear tests in collaboration with the Department of Atomic Energy, which made India a nuclear weapon State
Helped design "Kalam-Raju-Stent & Tablet"
In 1998, Dr Kalam and Dr Soma Raju developed a low-cost coronary stent called the 'Kalam-Raju' Stent. Later in 2012, they designed a rugged tablet computer for healthcare in rural areas, which was named the 'Kalam-Raju tablet
Driving force behind the development of lightweight calipers
Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam worked with his team to produce lightweight calipers for polio affected children. They weighed 1/10th of the weight of those that were available in the market. These calipers reduced their pain significantly while walking
