Who is Gitanjali Rao?
The Fifteen-year-old Indian American Gitanjali Rao, who is a young scientist and inventor, from Colorado has been named TIME's first ever Kid of the Year 2020.


Noteworthy credentials

Rao has been selected for her use of technology to tackle issues ranging from contaminated drinking water to opioid addiction and cyberbullying, and about her mission to create a global community of young innovators to solve problems the world over.

Leading the race

Rao was selected from a field of more than 5,000 nominees as TIME's first-ever Kid of the Year. She was interviewed by actor and activist Angelina Jolie for the TIME special.


Kindly and Innovation workshops

Kindly is one of Rao's innovations that seeks to detect cyberbullying. It is an app, as well as a chrome extension that uses artificial intelligence,

Rao has collaborated with rural schools, women in STEM organisations, museums all across the world to run "innovation workshops."


I don't look like your "I typical scientist"

Speaking on representation in the sphere of science and technology. Rao said, "It's weird to me that it was almost like people had assigned roles", adding "My goal has really shifted not only from creating my own devices to solve the world's problems, but inspiring others to do the same as well"
