Moderna, Pfizer & AstraZeneca vaccines
COLD CHAIN FOR IMMUNIZATION
How will the vaccine travel?
A chain of precisely coordinated events in temperature-controlled environments to store, manage and transport is called a Cold chain.
Vaccines always travel directly by plane from the manufacturer as refrigerated cargo to the destination country.
Then they are stored in cold rooms before being distributed
From storage facilities health workers carry vaccines in cold boxes and vaccine carriers.
TEMPERATURE RANGES FOR VACCINE STORAGE
Vaccines need to be kept at specific temperatures to retain their potency and varies from vaccine to vaccine.
Refrigerators should maintain temperatures between 2°C & 8°C. Freezers should maintain temperatures between -50°C & -15°C.
PFIZER-BIONTECH
The vaccine will be transported in suitcase-sized storage boxes packed with dry ice that have been specially designed by Pfizer.
Each reusable box can hold between 1,000 & 5,000 doses at ultra-cold temperatures for up to 10 days (unopened)
Storage temperature conditions: -70°C+10°C
Does India have the required cold chain: No
MODERNA
Shipping and long-term storage conditions at standard freezer temperatures of -20°C for 6 months
E Storage temperature conditions: 2" to 8°C for 30 days
Does India have the required cold chain: Yes, but it is limited
ASTRAZENECA-OXFORD
AstraZeneca

COVID - 19
The vaccine can be stored, transported and handled at normal refrigerated conditions: 2° to 8°C for at least 6 months
Does India have the required cold chain: Yes
WHERE DOES INDIA STAND?
India ranked within the 51-75 percentile range among 89 countries on effective vaccine management.
India has 27,000 cold chain points to keep vaccines at the right temperature, 700 refrigerated trucks and about 2.5 mn health workers to administer doses.
According to reports, the Govt will be sending more cold-chain storage equipment to states.
